Motivation – Motivating or Motivated ?

Too often do English teachers -and others- presume that motivation follows suit to request or requirement… but we couldn’t be further from the truth…

Motivation is, like all things, learnt…
We can see that in kids from a very young age already… children who are not challenged and motivated will not make the slightest effort if they can get their without have to make the first step…

Motivation goes with curiosity and that is in our human nature… but dies out if there is nobody there to fan that flame… hence the capital role of parents in education… supporting and assisting their offspring… as much as teachers… for lack of what you may throw what you like at the wall nothing will stick !

One of my clients was invited to Thailand to start a furniture production line there… trouble was, once there, he realised that the Thai only work when they’re hungry for their next meal… as soon as their stomach is full they down tools… and you have to wait until they’re hungry again…
One of my friends started a business in Indonesia and found the same… and I told him about my client and my piece of philosophy on the matter that so long as people don’t badly need something they won’t lift a finger… until their need becomes pressing and they have no alternative…

If teaching English relies on a well structured course with appropriate lesson planning the fact remains that students are usually sent to the course because it is part of their syllabus or by forcible parents… who often again don’t speak English themselves…

Once the students are motivated making the lessons interesting and challenging will fan the flame…
